Renting an apartment or home can be a very exciting time. There are many things you have to prepare for: decorating your new space, scoping out new walking trails, but also setting a proper budget. There are some things you can do to make sure that you are comfortable financially when you move into your new place.

1. Before you even begin looking at properties, you should set a rental budget. A general rule of thumb is that you should never pay more than 30% of your take-home income on housing.

2. Purchase renter’s insurance. It may not makesense now to pay more money for your new home, but remember that it isrelatively inexpensive, around $30 per month, and covers theft and damage.

3. Read your lease! It sounds so simple yet so manypeople do not read their lease and then discover that their rent may increaseor you may not know what utilities are included.
